So you've just bought a flexible garden
hose and you can't wait to try it in your garden. As we all
know, water is a basic necessity for the survival of plants. But what many of
us do not realize is that simply watering the plants is not enough. There are
things you should and shouldn't do when watering your plants, to make sure they
don't hang their heads in summer.
Below you will find the very important rules for watering
plants:
#1 - Maintain even moisture.
Most plants require even moisture to grow. But it's also
a good idea to water your plants when they are slightly dried out because this
promotes the growth of their roots.
#2 - Water less frequently but thoroughly.
Watering your flower bed one or two times per week is
usually enough. Keep in mind that it's always better to water plants not too frequently
as long as you do it thoroughly and with plenty of water using your expanding water hose.
#3 - Do your watering early in the morning or late in the
evening.
It's highly recommended that you water plants either late
in the evening or early in the morning when the soil is cool. This way, less
water will evaporate and the plants will be able to supply themselves with
water sufficiently before the heat of the day.
#4 - Let leaves stay dry.
It is not healthy for leaves to remain wet. When they do,
it may result to leaf molds. Also, leaves made wet under the heat of the sun
form slight burn marks.
#5 - Be generous with water.
Good watering means giving your plants enough amount of
water that can sufficiently reach the roots. Insufficient amounts of water will
only cover the upper portion of the soil. You want even the deepest roots of
the plant to absorb water, so make sure you give your plants adequate water.
#6 - Distribute water but have a target.
Watering only a single root point will result in one-sided
root growth. This also means that the soil will not be able to absorb adequate
nutrients. Using your flexible garden
hose, water around the plant and make sure you distribute water in the
entire area of irrigation.
#7 - Irrigate wisely so you can save water.
Having a moisture sensor in your irrigation system is a
good idea as it lets you know if the amount of water is enough already. This
tool, along with your "as seen on tv
hose" will help
you maintain a healthy garden.
